Playing online poker tournaments can be intimidating for new players.

Stacks are deep, blinds keep rising and there is a tendency to feel everyone else knows what they are doing. However, this is not necessarily the case.

If you are an Arab player new to online poker tournaments, you don't need advanced mathematics, software or experience to make a deep run.

You simply need a strong foundation and a few good habits. With that in mind, read on as we offer seven tournament tips that will make you more competitive.

Steal Blinds When the Opportunity Arises

Blinds and antes are always increasing in tournaments. This means chips are taken from everyone on the table in each hand. If you simply wait for premium hands, you will die a slow death.

When in a late position, raise a lot to steal blinds and antes. You really don't need a monster hand every time. Even an average hand, such as suited or connected cards, can do the trick.

That being said, do not raise mindlessly. If the players in the blinds are aggressive or over-defending, tighten up. A late position is always an opportunity to boost your stack.

Defend Your Big Blind

One of the most significant mistakes beginners make at poker casinos for Arab players is folding too much in the big blind.

You already have chips invested, and the pot odds are usually excellent. This means you can profitably call raises with many hands that may appear weak.

Suited cards, connected cards and any reasonable face cards can be played. Consistently folding your big blind makes it easy for others to steal from you. Defend if it is cheap and your hand can hit.

Be Careful with All-In Plays

When you have around 25-40 big blinds, mistakes are more expensive. New Arab players tend to get overexcited and go all-in too quickly after re-raising, but it is not the smartest strategy.

If you put a lot of chips in and then have to fold, you can lose a big chunk of your stack. In tournament play, this is often the beginning of the end.

You should re-raise with strong hands for value, use weaker hands to bluff and avoid committing yourself if you are not confident enough to go all-in.

Play More Post-Flop Poker with a Deep Stack

You don't have to force anything when the stacks are around 70-100 big blinds. Stay patient and selecting a good hand will eventually pay off.

Re-raise strong hands, call with good suited or connected hands, and avoid gambling with weak holdings.

Think of poker tournaments like a game of chess. The goal is to build pots when you are strong and keep them small when you are not.

Don't Bet Every Flop Automatically

Another very common mistake Arab beginners make during poker tournaments is betting the flop just because they are the pre-flop raiser.

Sometimes the board favours your opponent's range, especially if they are defending the big blind. Betting with nothing on these boards is a quick way to lose chips.

Before betting, ask yourself if the flop will actually help you or your opponent. Also consider whether you can continue if they raise. More importantly, do you have a back-up plan for the turn?

Always Think One Street Ahead

Online poker tournaments force players to think several steps ahead. Every action or inaction serves a purpose.

Before you bet or call, you should know what you will do if an opponent raises and which cards help you next. You also need to know when to stop bluffing.

The answers don't have to be perfect, but having a rough plan will stop you from making poor judgments. Good poker players think ahead. The great ones stay calm even when the plan changes.

Learn Basic Heads-Up Play

First place pays much more than second in most poker tournaments, so having good heads-up gaming skills is extremely important.

You need to learn how to play wide ranges and apply consistent pressure. Understanding how to read timing and betting patterns is incredibly valuable.

Practice head-up at small stakes to prepare yourself for big moments further down the road.
